modem volume
When my computer is dialing up it's enough to wake the dead.I have went into settings-control panel-modem properties and turned the modem volume all the way down. The problem is there is very little if any difference in noise level between the high and low settings. It's no big deal during the day but at night it will drive you crazy. I have WIN 98SE ,I don't suppose you need specifics on the modem but if so holler. Thanks,Tyler

ty1220,
If the speaker volume slider in the Modem properties doesn't quiet the modem try this:
1. Go to Start|Settings|Modems,
2. Click to select your modem, then click Properties.
3. On the Connection tab click Advanced.
4. In the Extra Settings box enter M0 (M-zero, not M-O) to turn volume off. L0 will turn the volume down.

I've worked around computers and modems/data communications all my life and in computer rooms which are typically very noisy. The modem "noise" does not annoy me. I set it to the lowest level (AT&L1 or AT&L3 - I forget) and let it alone.
(This is coming from someone that is on cable and doesn't use the modem
