Monitor problem

A client has an optiplex GX240. It is very touch as to how far into it it will load. Here is what is happening:

1. When booting into windows normally, the montior goes blank (but is still powered on), during or immediatley after the windows loading bar is done scrolling. Not sure if the computer is freezing up or not. Only way to turn it off is to hold the power button down for 10 seconds.

2. When booting using last good config, it shows the loading bar, but eventually freezes and the bar stops moving.

3. About 50 percent of the time when I load safe mode I am able to get into the log in screen and log in. Somewhat slow but works at least. The other 50 percent has either frozen after loading the agp440.sys or never started loading it (blank screen with monitor powered on).

I am running a virus scan right now and it has only 10% left. I havnt seen anything but I didnt think I would. The computer has the same problem with another monitor. No hardware or software have been added recently according to them.

Any ideas?

If you have more than 1 GX240, try the drive in another GX240 and see if the issue follows the drive.

I suspect it may be something in the OS, but trying the drive in another system (in other words trying the software on another similar system) would confirm this.

Another option is to download a Linux Live CD (e.g. Knoppix) and boot to that. If this can boot and see the hardware, you're problem is more likely to be the OS.

This may not give a solution quite yet, but it at least helps determine what you should focus on (hardware or software).
