Mouse problems - and more

Hi
My PC:
Dell Dim4500, pentium 4, 2.4 GHz, 1 GIG RAM
Video card - 128 MEG NVIDIA GeForce Ti 4600

The problem started with the game Warcraft 3.
My son has been playing this game for quite some time now - and then a couple weeks ago it started freezing up.
oddly enough this "freezing" has manifested itself in a couple of ways.
initialy - it just locked up entirely - nothing I could do would get it back.
had to actualy restart the pc !

I'm pretty sure the video card is what's causing this problem
So, I went to the NVIDIA site and downloaded and installed the latest driver.
Now, it  freezes for about 30 seconds - then come back for about 5 seconds then freeze again and on and on.
BTW - the Lord of the ring game does the same thing.

I tried to fool with the video card functions to see if I could eliminate the problem and now my mouse functions are all messed up.
The mouse is constantly trying to drill down to windows underneath the current window.
In Photoshop - I actualy have to turn off lower layers in order to work on a layer with text becuase every time I try to click on the text it flips to the BG layer.
every application  is affected.
when I click once it double clicks sometimes. other times I have to click repeatedly to get a simple selection.
I do a lot of CAD work and this inconsistancy could be disasterous
I disabled the NVIDIA features but it didn't help.

The mouse problem is my major issue, but i'd also like to fix the freezing problem.
BTW - we cleaned the fan - somebody on one of the game boards told my son this might help.
The fan was VERY dirty and I'm sure cooling was adversly effected.
This did seem to affect the freezing problem in that it changed a little - but it's still there.

TIA
Mark Miller
I

Have you tried reinstalling the mouse and it's drivers?  Have you tried another mouse?

    Thanks for the reply
No, i have not tried installing the mouse driver or a new mouse.
I wanted to avoid buying new hardware until I had exhausted any other possibilities.
But I realy could use a 3 button mouse anyways.
I also need to look at the windows updates - I've ignored this for far too long.

BTW - I forgot to say that I'm running windows XP
I've been running this PC as delivered for a year and a half without problems.
In fact, it's has been great.
I do a lot of 3-D rendering - and this PC can definitly crunch numbers ;-)
My previous PC took 36 hours once to render out an image.
I'll bet this Dell could do it in under 8

Yes, Window Updates are a must especially the ones designated as Critical.

As for the mouse... try re-installing the present one and see what happens.  As for trying another one... just ask around to see if someone you know has one you can borrow.  People like me have a box sitting in the closet some where with a few mices gathering dust.

    Hi
    Here's where I'm at
I did all the critical windows updates - service pack 1, and then 4 others came up after the service pack.
I looked through the "reccomended" updates but they didn't sound like anything I need.

I checked direct x and I have version 9.0b installed.
in the directx Diagnostic tool there was a "display" page
that allowed you to disable some features:

    DirectDraw Acceleration
    Direct3D Acceleration
    AGP Texture acceleration
    These are all currently enabled
Can/should I disable any of these?
I keep on looking for ways to disable whatever NVIDIA functions I started up when I loaded the new drivers, becuase THAT is when the mouse started to screw up.

I noticed that there was a statement about the file nv4_disp.dll not having a official digital "signature" is this a problem?
that .dll file is the main driver

the mouse is a Microsoft PS/2
    I checked the drivers via
    control panel/system/hardware/device manager
checked for updated drivers and none were found.
also tried to roll back the driver but it said none were available.

The interesting thing is that the mouse has gotten worse.
so bad in fact that I'm starting to think that it just might be a coincidental hardware problem.
I have to click hard and slow to get it to work - sounds like hardware anyways.
awful big coincidence though - and I could be wrong.
But, I'll get a new mouse today and check it out.

also downloaded adware and scanned the drive
    came up with 200 files

    In any case
I tried running Lord of the Rings after all this.
It froze again - but this time after about 30 seconds a windows error popped up. It then dumped me back into windows but at an extremly low resolution - looked like super VGA or something.
then when I tried to restart, the screen went blank accept for a huge selection arrow in a white box - and locked up
in the end I had to power off to get it back.

I'll run the virus scan today
    Mark
