Need More Help with my Power Supply Problem Please

I tried to post in a previous topic because it was similiar but I think it got lost on the bottom so Ill start a new one.
I have a Dimensions 4600 that is about 1 1/2 years old.
about a week to 2 weeks ago my fan started running pretty loudly whenever I turned the computer on. But after a min or 2 it went back to normal. Then a couple of days ago the computer just stopped working. I opened up the cover and it was really dusty so I cleaned that out. But it still does not work.
The 4 ABCD lights on the back are all clear (Off), But the green light on the motherboard is on. But I am really new to computers and looking at these posts Im not sure how to follow the steps.
Bev then tried to help me out by posting that I should.......try
testing the power supply by unplugging the 20 pin connector from the motherboard and jumping the Green wire to one of the Black wires, if power supply runs, then you know it's good
and she added a diagram that showed what the 20 pin connector looks like,
Now, because I really dont know much about computers I have the following questions.....
1) How do I get the 20 pin connector out? Do I just pull real hard? I dont want to break anything.
2) And when you say "if power supply runs, then you know it's good" . Do you mean that once I make this change the computer should start? or that the green light on the motherboard should still be working?

Igor55.Do not pull any wires out of the plug.Jumping means you use a small lenght of wire, then pushing one end of it into the green wire pin and the other end into a black wire pin, to complete the circuit between the two.
Or, you could use a paper clip and bend it into the shape of a "U"Unplug the computer
Next unplug the 20 pin main power to the motherboard from the power supply.
On the connector there will be a green wire on the edge with the clip to hold it in place. Put one end of the paperclip in there.
Next put the other end of the paper clip in any black wire on the other side of the connector.
Now that this is done, let it rest in the box and plug the computer back in. If the power supply is good, the case fans and powersupply fan should turn on, this means that you probably have a motherboard problem
If it does not turn on, then its a bad power supply.

Yet another question.........
I got the 20 pin thing out, but what exactly is meant by "Jumping the green wire to one of the black ones"? Do I pull the green wire and one of the black wires out of the white plastic piece and swap them? they seem to be in their pretty tight..

I removed the memory that came with the comp, Is it enough that I just unplug the power supply from the floppy drive? Are optical drives the CD / DVD drives? and is it ok to just unplug the power supply to those? Also , I never adjsuted anything in the comp. therefore I dont have any expansion cards rigtht?

yeah disconnect both power and data cables from the drives
with absolutely everything non essential out. You should be getting some beep errors from your mobo when yous tart it up. Knowing your power supply is good, if there's no beep codes, i think you can confidently say it's a bad motherboard.
You could try reseating the heat sink/processor on your board, but it's usually more advanced.
Either contact service parts (assuming youre in warranty) or ask for another source of mobo's for your pc
it'll probably cost you about $150ish
Not sure if I did this right but I...
unplugged the P7, P8 and P9 cords from the floppy drive, cd drive and cd record drive, I removed the memory modules from the 1 and 2 slots. Then I plugged the P1 (20 pin connector) back in and tried to power on. And no success, no response.
Did I do this right?

Thank you very much for your help scott and bev. Looks like Ill need a new motherboard. Do you think its still under warranty if Ive had it for 1.5 years? I only got the 1 year service contract. But maybe things like this are automatically covered for longer.??????

To get the 20 pin connector, yes, just pull. It's stubbourn but it pulls out. from the motherboard. The white plastic piece all the wires are connected into comes out with it (it's all one part)
If the power supply runs during that test, then generally you know it's good and you'd be looking at either the motherboard being your problem or a removable component (such as harddrive or expansion card).
Given you're description of the problem, i'd be rather amazed if the power supply does run.
