need professional assistance

My computer has been running fine for a year now, I have updated everything scanned and defragged my disk regularly, and now all of a sudden the system is running very poorly, lagging and hanging. When I go the "performance" option under admin. controls, I can see the system is spiking up to 100% in a very regular cycle, it didn't used to do this, before it just puttered along in a straight line (more or less) I assume these spikes are what is causing my performance lag, but I do not know what is causing them. I have no programs running other than the startup basics. Any help? I will gladly invite remote assist to anyone who can help.

Dimension 4100 P4 1.8g, 512ram, 64 meg Geforce3, all the bells and whistles, yadda, yadda, yadda.

If you need specifics, please contact me.

Sorry wbw2, but I don't do remote assistance and link to anyone's computer.  First of all, hit control/alt/delete (at the same time) and look at the processes tab to see what is taking up your system cycles.  System idle taking a large % (as in 98 etc) is normal.  Anything other than that should not be happening unless you are actually processing heavily at the time.  You should also go out to the LavaSoft site, download/install/ & run a program called AdAware.  Many times you can pick up spyware of adware which can slow you down greatly and you didn't even know you had the program.  If this does not help post back with as much information as you can.  Here is the link for AdAware:

Check this out. Task manager should telll you a great deal about what's running and how much of your resources its using. You'll need to eliminate each one and determine which is the problem. You might update your Anti Virus software and do a scan (again) as well.

Found this post, check it out..

    Task manager won't work

When you run Windows XP or Windows-based programs, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

    • Windows XP and Windows-based programs run very slowly.
    • Documents do not open properly, or when they open, they do not contain all the correct information.
You cannot start Windows Task Manager. : To start Task Manager, right-click a blank area of the taskbar, and then click Task Manager.

    • Your antivirus program no longer runs.

I'm not saying this is your problem but it bears checking into...
