I am having a problem with programs not responding. This problem has been occuring more frequently in the last 4 or 5 days. Why is this occuring and how do I fix it?

    Daniel,

That is way too little information for anyone to help you out. What programs? What do you mean they are "not responding?"

I've had the same problem -- programs simple won't open and after a time interval XP sends the message that the program is not responding followed by the question of whether I want a report sent to Microsoft.  It is not any one program in particular -- sometimes it will happen with XP functions such as dragging & dropping files (to my DVD+RW Drive) in Explorer.  Other times it is upon trying to open a program.

I've not been able to put a pattern to it yet.

Very annoying as it takes a reboot in order to continue working.

    sedny,

It doesn't help a lot if you post to a thread that was started over 3 years ago and has not had any response.  If you want help, you need to tell us which model computer you have, which verison of Windows you are running, and the exact text of any error messages you recieve.  Futher information - like the programs that were running when the problem occurred, would help us help you solve the problem.

    Hi,

I have had this problem before. It sure gets to be a pain. I never did really come up with a decent fix. I wish I did. The only solution i know about is to reload WinXp.   I have a home network,  I save the important data on another system. Then when something like this happens. I just reload and transfer the data then  all is well. I've gotten to the point where I can reload start to stop in about three hours. I only put on exactly what I want. Not every blessed thing I have. If later I find I need something that I didn't install earlier, then I'll install it.  It seems to be working so far.

I have heard that Windows will corrupt itself and there is no way out. cept reinstall. I like to repartion and then format then install. I then install the drivers then a defrag. I then update windows. Then I defrag again. If it ain't perfect. I do it over. I also have found that whenever I change the hardware. Not just a plug and play device. If I install something new, the first sign of stange things happening I do a reload. I don't mess with the frustration of trying to figure the Operating System out. Back with 3.1 or win95/98 ther could be a setting out of wack and usually you find it and fix it. This OS is so smart that when it gets screwed up ther isn't an easy fix. Some experts will think I jump to re-install too quickly but has made my life much, much easier.
