optiplex gx620 opengl video driver problem

hello

i have an old optiplex gx620 running windows xp whihc has been given to me.

my kids want to play minecraft, but keep getting an error, saying needs opengl video accelerator  - update video card drivers...  i have tried to update the drivers by downloading from the dell web site - but i still have the same problem.

can anyone suggest exactly which drivers to download  and anything else i might need to do so as i don't get the opengl error and the game will run?

thanks for your time

srj

    Hi srjsrj ,

Request you to follow any of these two steps depending on the type of video card the desktop has-

If the computer has an Intel Graphic Media Accelerator 950 then it supports Open GL1.4 so if the game is compatible to this version you can use the below link-

    www.dell.com/.../optiplex-gx620

But if the computer has an ATI Radeon X600 SE - 128MB then it supports Open GL 2.0 so if the game is compatible to this version you can use the below link-

    www.dell.com/.../optiplex-gx620

Please write back to us with the results.

    Hi srj,

Can you tell me the form factor of your GX620 and what video adapter you are trying to use to run Minecraft?

There is a known issue trying to run Minecraft with certain video cards for which Microsoft has provided a updated video drivers. You can watch a video of how to run this update here.

Intel 945 Graphics is not a real GPU.

Minecraft Says needs a Radeon 5450.

HOWEVER in the SFF the slot is so narrow that this card may not fit if the hard drive bay is installed.

There was a Guy that Shoehorned a 5670 into the 990 after using hacksaw, dremel tool, and then electric tape to hold it back together since the cover no longer latched.

    hello

thanks for your reply...   i did think about getting a graphics card, but it's an ultra small form factor and has no explansion slots so this isn't possible...   though whether i'd have the skills to hacksaw/dremel and tape one in is questionable - but i  like this idea anyway!!  :)

thanks for taking the time to reply.

Sorry about that. The reality is that the kids usually end up with the best computer and we adults get to use the old stuff.

    Thanks for that.

i think maybe i will look around for a better computer - this was a gift and i was hoping the kids would use it so i could have my laptop back,  whihc i am still hoping for - so think will have a look around for a cheap desktop where i can fit a graphics card if needs be.

thanks to everyone for all your suggestions - much appreciated.  :)
