Power Button

I am having a problem with my power button (I think)
I have my computer connected to an "APC Powermanager" which protects against power surges, and I use it to power down my computer after closing Windows XP for the night. My question is this...Recently when I turn on the power to my computer from the master switch on my APC, that my Dell Dimension 8100 starts to boot up for a second (hard drive light flickers) without pushing the power button on my Dell Computer. Many times this improper power surge causes the computer to start Windows check Disk program, not to mention the damage it is doing to my hard drive. How can I correct this problem. Do I need a new power switch on my Dell... or is this a Bios problem?

Thanks for any help. Breezer702

    Hi:

Strange why your computer just started doing different?

This may or may not work for your 8100.

I have my 8200 set up to come on when I turn on my desk power panel.
I never use the Dell power switch. I use the APC Pro SurgeArrest upstream of my desk power panel.

    For setup:

Right after the computer starts and just as soon as F2 appears at the top right of the screen press F2.
This takes you to System Setup.

Scroll down to AC Power Recovery with the arrow key.
I set my computer to ON.

Now after Windows XP shuts down, I shut off the main power switch on my desk power panel, that kills my monitor, sound system, printer and scanner. The next morning I turn on the one switch and all my equipment starts. The same procedure would apply to a switch on a Surge Protector.

    Thanks Dayton for your thoughts,

But in that configuration...I would have to worry about a power failure that could possibly start and re-start my computer when power is restored or flickers. Living in Florida I feel safer for what ever reason if I am not around my computer in sleep mode that if my power fluctuates...my computers start button will not allow power to flicker on and off to my hard drive. Does that make any sense.?
I noticed this problem after I did a clean install of XP a few weeks ago...Would that make a difference?

    Afternoon,

I don't understand why you want to shut off the power to the computer all the time, it just wears down the internal battery.

Also, the instructions for my HP 4200 scanner say NOT to turn off the power, like while hooked to a power strip, it should be plugged in all the time. Yours may be different.

If severe thunder-boomers are in the area that is a different matter.

    Hi Breezer702,

Yes, I understand you completely. I added a small relay and push
button switch to my desk panel to prevent the power coming
back on in case of power failure. If the power goes off
the relay prevents power from going to the desk panel
until I push the push button switch.
We have almost as many power failures in AR as you do in FL.

Back to setup... have you check Power Recovery in System Setup (BIOS)?
From what you say I think you would want it set to "OFF".
But using OFF on mine causes a surge of power to go to the
computer when power is applied, the light will flash but not start up.
This is the reason I have Power Recovery set to "ON".

How was your system setup before the clean install?
Did you turn on the power, then push the switch on your computer
for start? The computer didn't flicker when you first turned on power?
