Problems with Dell Dimension 8200
Hi all,
I bought this computer system for about 2 week now. When I first received the system and run a few hours I found a problem with this computer. There were an inconsistent humming and vibration sound from my computer. So therefore, I called customer service to tell them of the problem. After spending about 2 hours calling them. They send a Dell Service Technician to my house and replace the DVD-ROM Drive because they think it is what caused the problem. After installing the drive, the technician told me that it sounded quiet now and should be ok. So I trust the technician, however now I still experiencing the same problem. I don't think replacing the DVD-ROM Drive solved the problem, but I don't know that much about computer so I trusted in the technician.
To make the story short. Does anyone know what causes the humming and abnormal vibration? The technician told me it is a high tech computer so it suppose to be like that. But I don't think so, because I use to have an old 500MHZ IBM computer and even it didn't do anything like this.
I'm sorry for writing a long story, but right now I'm frustrated. This is my first online buying experience and also a new member of this forum. I hope someone can help me or advise what I should do now.

maybe you could open the case and determine what it is. it might be a noisy fan which is not too uncommon and can be replaced by dell.

make sure you have the quite fan I think it's NMB, if not, call tech and they send you one

with a faster computer you need more air flow which in ture a bigger fan so the nosie is a little louder plus does your video have a fan too? This will increase the noise also. I have a 8200 with a video card with a fan and it's about twice as noisy as my old dell xps 333 but than it's 6 times faste. But you should check and make sure the fan isn't hitting anything, to make a louder sound.

Does your system still vibrate with no disks in your DVD drive(or CR-RW drive if you have one)? If so, one of your cooling fans is bad and the CPU fan seems to be the popular culprit. At normal room temperature the fan noise from your system should be barely noticeable. If you only hear the noise/vibration with a disk in your optical drive that's pretty normal. It varies depending on how hard the drive needs to work to find the data.

Your computer, Hi-tech or not should be very quiet. It sounds like the case fan that is making the noise and vibration, If anyone has a Dell 8200 that is loud then it should be replaced! Don't let anyone tell you different. Mine is so quiet I have to check to see if it's on.Yours should be the same. I think Dell is reinstalling these bad fans hoping to find someone deaf or dumb..

After about two weeks, my new system started making an unusual noise with an associated vibration. Originallly, I thought the source of the noise was the CPU cooling fan especially after reading all the posts on Dell|Talk. I sent an e-mail to Dell and received a very prompt reply with specific instructions on how to properly troubleshoot the source of the noise. I followed the instructions carefully which revealed that the source of the noise was the power supply. Via e-mail, I informed Dell tech support of the results. Within three days a service tech showed up with a new power supply. He had it installed within ten minutes and the computer has been as quiet as a 'church mouse' ever since.

Look into the rear of your case. If you see Datec that is the culprit.

If you have the instructions in a form you could post them here to trouble shoot noisy systems could you post them here? My disk is OK (after Dell replaced it -with an upgrade, thank you Dell) but the system continues to be noisy. Probably is the fan.

ac130nav, may I have the instructions to troubleshoot the source of the noise? That will help me out alot.
I think I agree with ac130nav. From examing the computer and put my ear close to it. It seem like the source comes from the right side of the computer. I think it is either the power supply or something associate with it, but I'm not sure. When Dell technician came the last time, I told him is it the power supply that is causing the problem? He stated, "From my experience there should not be anything wrong with the power supply." So now I'm in mid-air. I have no clues what to do next.
BTW, Thank You for all the input.

I just had the fan on my 8200 replaced for the second time. This time I can not even hear it running and it is on the desk top about a foot from me. Call Tech Support and tell them your case fan is making an awful noise. Actually I never called I did it all through email. Here;

Their first responce may be an automated email, just reply and tell them you unplug the case fan and the noise stopped and you would like the fan replaced. They made an appointment with a Tech person to call me. The new fan was installed with in a couple of days.
