Processor speed issue

Hi,

I bought a new XPS 420 over a week ago and something has been bothering me.  The processor for the machine is a Q6600 @ 2.40 ghz.  However, when I run CPU-Z it clearly shows the core speed is running at 1596 mhz.  Occasionally, it will jump to 2394 mhz but it'll only last a split second.  My question is whether the processor was somehow set at a lower speed than it should be, or maybe it's actually running at full speed but not displaying the proper speed?  Thanks in advance.

Here's some information that might help.  This following appears after I run the CPU-Z application:

Processor - Q6600 @ 2.40 ghz

Core Speed 1596.0 mhz

Muitiplier x6

Bus Speed 266.0 mhz

Rated FSB 1064.2 mhz

Q: CPU-Z reports my CPU speed below its stock frequency.
A: This is the effect of the CPU power reduction mechanism : C1E (Enhanced Halt State) and/or EIST (Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology) for Intel CPUs, Cool'n'Quiet and or PowerNow! for AMD CPUs. Load your system and you will see the frequency increase to its nominal value.

You can go into the BIOS and shut off C1E and Speedstep. This will prevent your clock multiplier from going down to 6.

Cpu-z is realtime i belive the id utility just reads the chip codes..

This is due to C1E and Speedstep being enabled in the BIOS, and it only runs that slow when your CPU is not being heavily taxed. It's normal. If it bothers you, you can go into your BIOS at startup and shut off C1E and Speedstep and it will stay at it's rated speed at all times.

I found the exact same problem with my system when I ran the system info tool for the same company as Cpu-Z 1.5ghz on core 2 I think, cores 0,1,3 were fine running at the stated speed. Was wondering if it was underclocked on one core but energy saving looks more plausible considering the quad core chips from intel need to use flawless dual core parts.

Yep, never noticed. When I launch FSX CPUZ shows 2.4. I thought I had the speed step off in bios, but I imagine it really doesn't matter as long as you get max speed when you need it.

It also saves alot of unneeded heat and watts used. You in real life should never notice it.OK maybe if u added up heat and watts from 500 420's..:smileywink:
