Edna, Personally I never turn the monitor off untill it has completed the shut down in case there is a problem in the procedure. If all okay then I turn off monitor and speakers. There are some who do not turn off at all, so there is really no one correct way to do it. Its a matter of preference. Kip

There isn't any "right way", except to be sure and do an "orderly" shutdown of the PC, using the Start, Turn Off Computer, Turn Off (in XP). Once the CPU is shutdown you can turn off the other devices in whatever order you want and you could even turn off the speakers (and printer) before you do the shutdown.

However, don't get into the "turn on, turn off" cycle. e.g. don't turn on the system to get e-mail or whatever and then turn it off 30 minutes later and turn around and do the same thing an hour later. You are better off leaving the system on while you are home if you are going to be using it periodically during the day (or evening). Although power supplies and electronic components have become more reliable and less "power" sensitive it's still not a good idea to be turning it on and off frequently. May not cause any problems now, but in the long range it could lead to component failure.
