Sound problems

I have a 8300 dimension series with XP. My problem is if I play something with a media player my external speakers(with subwoofer) works fine. But there is no sound for anything else, such as when I boot up, shut down, or error sounds. However, if I go into Sounds and audio devices properties, click on sounds tab, the sounds work in the program events(where you pick your wav. files for each event). Any help would be appreciated.

I have a similar type of problem. When I first boot up the computer sounds are all there. I get the start up and everything. After a random amount of time the sounds just seem to dissapear. When I play things via the Windows media player it is fine. If I go to thje control panel under sounds tab and play the individual sounds they too work fine. If I reboot the processor the sounds will work again for an undetermined amount of time.

I am almost positive that my problem is in the software somewhere. Due to the fact that my original D3000 smoked and died 94 days into ownership it was replaced by a new unit. Not wanting to lose all my data I swapped hard drives and all was well. That is until I realized that the sound problem followed the swap. Kinda strange and really no big thing but................ If I figure it out I'll post here and let you know. :)
