VIRTUAL MACHINE

Dell 8400

4GB Ram

250 GB Ram

I've tried once and again to run a virtual machine "VM Ware workstation or VM Viewer" in order to try out Win 8 but it can't be done. With Workstation I get the message that it can't be installed in my system due to hardware and with Viewer, I can get it installed but when I try to install the program I get a message that states that my hardware does not support hardware acceleration or a similar quote.

Please advise.

    Dear Sir,

Is there any VM that will run in a 32bit system as the Dell Dimension 8400?

    Hi ameneses54,

In order to install Windows 8, the system hardware must be compatible with Windows 8. 'Windows 8 Release Preview' works great on the same hardware that powers Windows 7. Minimum System Requirements for running Windows 8 are:

    • Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster
    • RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
    • Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
    • Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver
    • Additional requirements to use certain features:
    • To use touch, you need a tablet or a monitor that supports multitouch.
    • To access the Windows Store and to download and run apps, you need an active Internet connection and a screen resolution of at least 1024 x 768.
    • To snap apps, you need a screen resolution of at least 1366 x 768.

You can also check the minimum system requirements to run 'VM viewer' on your computer from the link below:

You may need to upgrade the system hardware to install VM viewer or Windows 8 on your computer.

    Please reply for further clarifications.

    Hi ameneses54,

There are couple of virtual machines available. There are some versions of Workstation 6.0 that are compatible with 32 bit architecture. You can check the more compatible versions of VMware for 32 bit architecture from the link below:

    http://bit.ly/OMZKxr

Once you browse on to the link above, you need to select:

    • Product that you are trying to use (VMware Workstation or VMware viewer , VMware player).
    • Operating system Family(Current Operating system installed on your computer).
    • Product release version.
    • Partner name and other details (a screenshot is attached below).
    • Then Click on 'Update and view results'.
    • You will get compatible versions of the product that you can install on your computer.

You can find the detailed information about the supported host and Operating systems for VMware player from the link below:

    http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vmware_player200.pdf

Another virtual software that you can use is 'Virtual Box' by Oracle. It supports both 32 and 64 bit platforms. There is a list of Windows Operating systems compatible with Virtual Box:

    • Windows XP, all service packs (32-bit)
    • Windows Server 2003 (32-bit)
    • Windows Vista (32-bit and 64-bit[1]).
    • Windows Server 2008 (32-bit and 64-bit)
    • Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit)
    • Windows 8 (32-bit and 64-bit)

You can find more information about that from the link below:

    http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch01.html#idp16884272

Please reply in case you have further questions.

    I still can't run VirtualBox.

Does anybody know if a Dell Dimension 8400, 3.6 Ghz  supports virtualization--- I can't run VirtualBpx without getting an error that virtualization should be enabled and I find no such setting in the Bios for this computer.

    Please advise.

    Hi ameneses54 ,

I apologize for the delayed response. Your computer has an Intel Pentium 4 560 Processor and it does not support virtualization.

You can check the details of the processor of your computer from the link: http://intel.ly/PQ1tVK .

    Please reply for further clarifications.
