when i turn the computer on it gives me this error
are these the front two usb? (i dont have anything pluged into them)
I've seen those errors from time to time, and to be honest, could never decipher what they meant. It could be the card reader as mentinoed above.
What does your device manager say regarding the USB controllers, and are there any devices that are labeled as unknown or have the excalmation point anywhere.

Okay so in the back i have the keyboard, two printers and ir reciever for remote, and nothing in the front... and that is what my device manager looks like
The Unknown Device is showing up under USB Controllers. The next step is to try to identify what that is.
Right click it and uninstall it. Then right click anywhere again, Scan for hardware changes. What happens then is that it may give you a clue as to what that device is, but more likely it will simply install the Unknown Device again.
Next, unplug all USB devices except for the keyboard. Is the Unknown Device still there? If not, plug in the USB devices one by one and see which one brings up this Unknown Device. My guess is that it's one of the printers - they often have two or more device drivers that are installed.
- Did you upgrade your BIOS to (A04)?.. I had the same issue when I upgraded to the latest XPS 420 bios update that was posted on Dell's website, the (A04) is only to support the new Intel CPUs.. I thought maybe the motherboard was damaged, so I had Dell come out & replace it.. After the motherboard was swapped out, everything was back to normal until I upgraded the BIOS to (A04), & then it dawned on me, the BIOS updated was the problem.. I did the same BIOS update w/ the old motherboard that I thought was damaged, but wasn't.. I re-flashed the BIOS to (A03), & everything was back to normal..
I have an XPS 420. I have a ATI digital cable tuner and Epson 700 scanner. As some may know, there have been issues with the tuner, but this is different. Last night both the scanner and tuner were disconnected. This has happened a couple times and solved by a reboot. Strangely, keyboard and mouse still function.
Could someone point me to the other two threads on this issue that were referred to?
Thanks, kklemme

What is the exact error you are getting when you boot the PC? Have you tried booting will all USB devices disconnected?
I've had a few similar problems with USB devices, but they all are related to drivers - either the manufacturer didn't supply Vista drivers, or the Windows drivers in Vista weren't doing what they were supposed to be doing.
