1150 external hard drive compatability?

Hi all, I currently own a Inspiron 1150 which has been a good little computer, but now I am always running out of space when editing videos etc.  Can i buy any of the external hard drives on the market and plug it into my 1150 via the USB cable?  could I say buy a 200GB  external drive or do I have to be careful to get one which is compatable?  Thanks alot for any help anyone can offer on this subject as I have very limited knowledge in this area.

You shouldn't have any problem using an external USB hard drive with your 1150 laptop. The only proviso is that your external hard drive should have its own external power supply as the USB ports on the 1150 will not be able to provide enough power to run that hard drive.

When you plug in your external hard drive you should see a balloon appearing near your clock telling you that Windows has found new hardware and installing it. After that is done, you will need to format your hard drive before it will be seen in Windows.
