The 2408WFP does not require a Windows 7 driver to function. Windows 7 will load its generic PNP driver for the monitor. The 2408WFP has the following ports:
DP (DisplayPort)
DVI 1
DVI 2
VGA
How are you connecting the 2408WFP to the E6520? To what ports using what cabling?

This monitor automatically provides the computer system with its Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) using Display Data Channel (DDC) protocols so the system can configure itself and optimize the monitor settings.

Would suggest you to connect a different monitor and check. This will isolate if the issue is with the monitor cable or VGA port of the laptop.

Thanks! I also tried to connect another monitor (Samsung, WLAN) which caused a nice crash...so it's probably not the VGA port?

"not the VGA port"...do you mean on the laptop or the monitors? If both monitors connected to the laptop VGA port have the same issue of not being seen, that leads me to think the issue is with the laptop.

I connected the Dell monitor to the VGA port of the laptop. The Samsung monitor I tried with a dongle. So I think you are right - it's a problem with the laptop but may be not (only) with its VGA port...
