600m Screen issue

Question regarding Inspiron 600m:
Video Card is a Mobility Radeon 9000 and I have updated the driver as of 11/15/06. The problem is that the computer will function properly however the screen is unwillling to cooperate. Upon Start-up, the screen appears to be fine; once the startup and log in have taken place, the screen goes black upon the boot of winXP desktop. when docked, the external monitor functions just fine and the system seems to work properly. Any information regarding this issue would be of great help and greatly appreciated.

have you already tried to toggle the video modes? because it is possible that your video mode is just set to external monitor. try to toggle fn+f8 and make sure that you allow video on both screens (that's pressing the combination thrice).

if it still doesnt show video on the lcd:
    > remove the external monitor first.
    > keep tapping f8 on the dell screen (it will show you advance options menu
    > choose safe mode and check if it is going to show video on windows.

***if it does we have a problem with the video driver. it is either corrupt or needs to be updated. if that is the case, go to downloads page on this site and download the driver you need.

another way to verify functionality of video and lcd is the PSA diagnostics.
    to do this...

    > press f12 on the dell logo (it will show you the boot device menu). among the options you have ONBOARD DIAGNOSTICS or DIAGNOSTICS. just select that and press on enter. it would automatically run tests on your computer so that you coul;d verify if there are any failures on your system. (there would be a HARDWARE DIAGNOSTIC test after that make sure you press on express test rather than the 2hour extended test and also insert the operating system cd before running this test). the process would not delete anything on the computer.
