- I was anxiously awaiting my 8600 as I had returned a 600M because of the keyboard flimsiness etc. I am quite please with the keyboard on my 8600. The pointer buttons, however, leave much to desire as they require more than typical effort to activate (the trackpad ones are ok).
yeah, i'm typing with my 8600 right now, it's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be, i'm a pretty light typer, so it could b some people press a big harder on the keyboard which will cause it to bounce. though the keyboard isn't all that bad, i'm still not very satisfied with it, but i can live with it. the thing that annoys me most about this keyboard is if you don't push hit the exact center or close to the center with these keys they sometimes don't respond. on the bright side i'll be a better typer after this 8600, i'll be able to hit dead center on every key!, but i really shouldn't have to justify for the poor quality of this keyboard.

keyboard isn't not all that bad, after getting use to it you should be able to manage.
i suggest if you plan on using this computer for a lot of word processing you should get an external keyboard
Wow... I'm glad I stumbled onto this thread. My buttons associated with the trackpoint aren't that great. My left button is acceptable but my right one needs quite a bit of force to get it to register. It's a pain when you have to right click. Because of this I switched to the touchpad, but in reality I've bought a mouse for it. I almost considered sending it back but figure with the service manual I can do my own repairs.
BTW, I have also have an IBM thinkpad and because of this I can tell a HUGE difference in quality between it and the Inspirion. The keyboard on the Dell leaves much to be desired not to mention the awesome trackpoint on the IBM. I've been so used to (and spoiled) by IBM that when I got my Dell it was somewhat a dissappointment. Oh well. Too bad thinkpads don't have the larger displays otherwise I would have gone with them.

Yup, same problem with the trackstick buttons on my NEW 8600, except on reciept of my NEW notebook they were not working AT ALL !! A tech came out to replace the faulty parts and although they are working now I still have to press quite hard to get them to do something.Seems like a design fault (one of many with this supposedly "ultimate multimedia machine" - please see the video thread of the messageboard for more info.)
This is the second thing to be fixed on my NEW notebook - the first being its WSXGA lcd which needed to be replaced due to development of a fixed horizontal line across it that would not go away no matter what I tried.
It would have been good if they fixed the trackstick problem at the same time as replaceing the lcd but the techs ignored the trackstick at that time and as a result they had to send someone else to fix this when I got my 8600 back from them after waiting for 2 weeks for their advertised 6 day turnaround time for collect and return.
Lets pray that nothing else crops up, although the dvd lines issue with the video card has STILL NOT BEEN ADDRESSED.(See video thread).
Will I be buying Dell next time? I think not.

Well, there has been several posts regarding the keyboard issue in these forums. For more information, go to the keyboard/pointing devices board under Inspiron. I'm waiting for my I8600 and so far, looks like I might experience the same problem with the flimsy keyboard that you have. I would contact Dell and see about returning your notebook for a replacement under the 30 day return policy.
