Battery cannot be identified
I bought a Dell Inspiron 1501 last week. When I turned it on for the first time, it brought up a screen saying "WARNING: The battery cannot be identified. This system will not charge this battery." The laptop won't run on the battery. The battery test lights indicate a fault. I have checked the terminalsm restarted it etc time and time again. Dell won't answer my emails and I can't reach them on the phone. Does anyone know how I could resolve this issue? Thanks.

Same problem here. No resolution yet. See at http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board?board.id=insp_powerAny suggestions will be appreciated.- I've just bought a new Dell battery for my son's Inspiron 6000, and it's come up with the same "Battery cannot be identified" warning on boot-up. Having spent the last couple of days searching the internet, all I can say is that this seems to be a very common fault that sparks off lots of wild talk about needing to replace everything from the battery to the motherboard. The best common reported solution I have found is to downgrade the Bios to the lowest version. I have come across half-a-dozen reports of this resolving the problem - and conversely of the battery identification problem happening straight after a Bios upgrade. I think this is a side-effect of Dell adding intelligence to the battery and the charging circuits. I am guessing, but I assume this was given a major overhaul after their problem with batteries overheating? Maybe newer versions of the Bios are much fussier or don't like older batteries.I would have hoped that Dell Tech Support would have been more forthcoming.I have lodged a query with the supplier that I just bought the battery from, on the grounds that I'm lazy and don't want to risk updating the Bios unless I have to. One forum seemed to suggest that whilst upgrading was simple, downgrading was tricky? I will check this out while I wait for a response from the supplier - I'll let you know how I get on.

If you're outside the US you'll need to contact your local Dell office.
