Blank Screen after Windows Logon Logo

I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 that has been working fine for the past two years until this morning.  After turning it on, the Dell Screen appears, then the Windows XP logo and then the screen stays black, but the Windows startup tune plays and the hard drive light goes on just as it normally would.

I have run Dell Diagnostics that is loaded on the HD without any issue.  I get the same black screen if I try to hook up the laptop to an external monitor (both analog or DVI).  Booting in safe mode or enabling VGA works fine.  I have not installed new software or updated anything recently.

I have read that people have had a similar problem relating to a lid close pin that gets stuck, but I cannot locate this on my system.

I appreciate anyone's input!

I read one post that says try this: Shut down and remove the power cord from the wall jack. Take the battery/batteries out and then hold the power button for like 10 seconds. Then put the battery back in and power plug back on the outlet and try booting. Has worked for some.

    dbramlet,

Thanks, but no luck with that.

Is there a switch or sensor that recognizes if the laptop is open or closed?

I will have to let someone else tell you that for sure. But if so it probably would be the display connection to the MB and the MB must sense it there. If not it would have to be in the latch and I have never seen anything with the latch that could sense it.

I downloaded and installed the drivers for the mobility radeon x300 in VGA mode and upon reboot, everything worked fine.
    Thanks for your help.

I had a black screen just before the Windows login screen as well. This worked:

    - press F8 before Windows startup
    - select VGA mode
    - uninstall the ATI MOBILITY RADEON X300 driver
    - reboot
    - search for new hardware (reinstalls the driver)

    Hope this helps.
