Computer shuts off when AC adaptor is unplugged

I have an Inspiron 5100 and recently, the computer shuts off when the AC adaptor is unplugged or jostled.  I have checked the battery status and it is registering 100% charged and online.  Does anyone have any ideas as to why this could be happening?
Even though the battery is registering 100% charged and online, could it be that the battery needs replacing?
Thank you for your input and your advice! :smileyhappy:

If it runs normally on AC (i.e., doesn't shut down if the power is left connected) the problem is with the battery.

If it does shut down even with the battery connected when it's jostled, chances are the connectoin between the power jack and mainboard is faulty (which can sometimes, but not always be fixed by a shop versed in surface mount repair); the only sure fix is a replacement mainboard.

Thank you for your input!  I will definitely try out getting a new battery.  Thanks again.
