D600 SXGA+ weird screen flicker
Hey all,
I just got a new Latitude D600 with an SXGA+ screen and an ATI Radeon 9000 about a week ago. Overall, it seems to be a very good investment, however I do have a problem with the display. It's hard to describe but it bothers me since the problem is very apparent (at least to me). I searched the Dell support fora and came across the following posting (I'm quoting the part of it that relates to me):
"The image has some flicker, especially visible on a medium gray or blue-grayish background. It almost seems like alternating lines were displayed interlaced, reminding me of a DSTN display... When I drag a window around, the vertical edges get a little jaggy, and when I look at these jaggies closer, it also looks like every second line is slightly shifted. Also, when moving the highlight across menus (dark blue moving on light gray background), the dark blue highlight bar displays with a kind of "blinds" effect."
I thought, "wow, this is exactly the problem I'm experiencing." Unfortunately, the original post was never replied to by anyone, so I'm hoping that maybe this time someone could help me out . Is anybody aware of a fix to this bug (or whatever it is)? I'd be much obliged. The bug may not seem like a big deal (it's not like the laptop is unusable), but it annoys the heck out me.

I've noticed this too, I'm not sure, but I think it is a problem with all LCD screens, as the D600 isnt the only screen I've seen it on.
The D600 also has a different flickering problem i've noticed many times on battery with the brightness turned to anything but the max where it is the backlight that appears to flicker.

What resolution are you running? IIRC, the SXGA+ screens have appearance issues at any resolution below 1400x1050, so this may be the issue, or at least contributing to it if you are not using that resolution...352

I'm running @ 1400x1050. Changing the resolution does not affect the flicker, however - I can even notice the "blinds" effect in the F8 menu on Windows startup.352

im not sure im exactly understanding what you are describing
but if its that small horizonal lines (normally grey) that are close togeteher and repeat a lot then i think that the problem is that its hte way the LCD is displaying it - most apparent on websites that have that as the background
its standard; as i have seen this on a couple of LCD projectors and the 2 lcd's that i have owned.
on the regular desktop lcd i was able to adjust drom 60 to 75hz (not exactly the same thing as what changing that on a CRT does, but you get the same end result)
as for the laptop - there arent any refresh options (hardware) though there might be some minor driver updates that can fix the problem that you are having - you did say that you had the latest drivers there might be some minor setting you can adjust, though off the top of my head i cant think of a setting that would do that other than perhaps to drop the "hardware acceleration" (a slider on the [troubleshooting] tab in display properties \ settings tab \ advanced...352

The "bug" is most evident in Windows menus, when I go from one menu item to another (and especially so if I change back and forth between the items quickly). The selection (blue on gray background) momentarily becomes like blue window blinds against the grey skies (or vice-versa) - a series of alternating thin blue/grey lines. This effect last only a fraction of a second, but it is nevertheless noticeable and very annoying :(

Interesting... Well it's somewhat reassuring to know that this is not a one-of-a-kind problem. My thinking on this is that it's a peculiarity of the particular LCD model, but, who knows, maybe it is possible to fix it. As for the backlight flicker, I have not noticed it (yet).352

Hi,
Its great to see that someone else has identified the flickering problem on the D600. (I thought myself and IT colleagues were seeing things)
When running of the battery and the brightness turned down slightly, the screen starts to flicker lightly, just enough to make it annoying. Being a laptop, I dont think we should be restricted to relying on power supply, nor have to have full brightness turned up.

Did anyone solve this problem? I just got my LCD back after sending it in to be replaced, and I hadn't noticed this on the old screen. It's really distracting and only affects the left half of the screen. Anyone have any ideas? I guess I'll try sending it back again and trying another new screen, unless someone knows of a fix? (loose cable?)
