DELL 1420 Audio problem
Last few days ago, when i open the musics inside my laptop, i can heard something like "pok" sound along the music is running. Especially when the music almost reach the end, i can heard clearly the music not run smoothly, just like stucking for a while then continue to run the music.
No matter i use either my DELL 1420 build in spearker, earphone or even connect to a hi-fi, such a problem still occur.
I had tried to use Recovery to DELL factory condition and reinstall the Sound Blaster softwere, the problem still there. Do someone know what's going on with my laptop and how's the solution.
Thank a lot,
Andy

jimco,
Well, just now i have used DELL Factory Image Restore and no install any softwere, but the problem still haven't solve yet. Is it the time to contact the tech support to come to repair my laptop? If according to my case, would they bring my laptop back to DELL centre to service it instead of instand service while in my house?
Thank you.

Switch on your computer and hold down F12 while booting up select Dell Diagnostics and run the Diagnostics, in particular run the advanced ones for audio (this may take a while).Jim Coates

"Is it the time to contact the tech support to come to repair my laptop?"
First follow natakuc4's good advice and run the audio test in Dell Diagnostics. If you hear the noise during then test that will definitely confirm the hardware problem. If you don't hear the noise then we have some head scratching to do.
To run Diagnostics restart the computer and as soon as it starts to boot up hold down f12. Select 'Diagnostic' from the boot menu. The computer will run its pre-boot assessment tests for 3 or 4 minutes before the Dell Diagnostic starts. These pre-boot tests play some beeps and tones through the system speaker but this doesn't test the rest of the audio hardware, so you still need to let Dell Diagnostics run after the pre-boot tests finish. Dell Diagnostics plays an instrumental piece of music complete with drums, so if you only hear some tones then you have only run the pre-boot assessment test.
When Dell Diagnostics opens, select 'custom', then the audio test. Dell Diagnostics will play some audio and ask you whether you heard it. Listen for the noise while that audio is playing. If you do hear the noise then get Dell to do a repair. If you do not hear the noise that means the hardware is okay but there is a problem with the software or configuration.

It depends on what kind of warranty you have. If it is the standard one then you must sent the computer to Dell. If it's a premium warranty then Dell will send a technician to you. He or she should be able to do the repair on the spot. Often the repair involves just replacing the motherboard with a new one.

Hi,
I think it is not hardware problem, because when i open for the instrumental musics, play until almost reach the end, then the stucking of sound occur(Quite serious)(the condition is like a music player running a serious damaged CD causes stucking of music), and still can heard the "pik" "pok" sound. But when running CD it have similar problem which can hear the noise but the stucking condition not serious.
Thank you,
Andy.
Software rest test .... ok
Interruption test ..... ok
Analog Sould Playback test .... ok
Headphone 2(HP2) playback test .... fail
When i hear the simple music through the system test, no any other sound i heard. But click RUN the Headphone 2(HP2) playback test, several "pik" "pok" "pik" "pok" sound occur in a second.

Andy,
If the music skips near the end of a song when you use Windows Media Player then you have a known problem. There is a solution in the FAQ -- the 1st thread on this board -- in question # 15.

If you heard the noise at any time during the Dell Diagnostic audio test then it is the hardware, not the Windows software or driver. That is because the test runs in its own DOS partition on the hard drive (that is why you have to go through the boot menu to get to the test) entirely outside of Windows and its drivers. The test was designed this way so that a tech can use it to separate hardware problems from software problems. Any problems that occur during the test are hardware problems by design.

Hi,
I might be remember the cause of this problem. When I'm gaming and sometimes accedently pressed many times of left shift, then a loud and sharp beep shout out, and sometimes don't know why different tone of beeps shout out too after the left shift messege been closed. Could this be the source of problem?
Andy.

"I see, but i forgot to tell you that when i run the Headphone 2(HP2) playback test, i can't heard anything, jst several that kind of "pik" "pok" sound only within 1 second. Then, is it confirmed that is hardware problem?"
If it is not a hardware problem then Restoring the computer to factory configuration would fix it (but only if the problem did not exist when you first got the computer). You already tried that and it didn't fix it. I think you should contact tech support and let them sort it all out.
Jim
PS don't know why left shift causes a beep.

Andy,
After you use either Dell's PC Restore (for XP) or Factory Image Restore (Vista),
everything will work again just like it did when you first got the computer, EXCEPT for any hardware problems that developed during the time you have owned it.
If your computer did not make the noise when you first got it, and if you used either Dell's PC Restore or Factory Image Restore, then you should contact tech support to get your computer repaired.

Before contacting tech support do it again but do not install any additional software like the Sound Blaster stuff. Listen to it exactly as it was when you got it.
