Dell Latitude D420 will not switch on

The laptop (which is out of warranty) suddenly switched off one day and I was unable to restart it. I've done a little troubleshooting and these are the things I've noticed so far (I appreciate some of what I've found may be normal).

1. The battery appears to be OK - when I press the battery symbol all 5 LED lights are green with no flashing.

2. For a short time after the problem occurred pressing the power button on the laptop (connected to mains or battery) lit up the LED display (caps lock I think) for a split second, but this has stopped happening.

3. If I disconnect the battery and attach the mains lead the laptop will not power up, and there is no indication of power.

4. If I connect the docking unit to the mains the power switch on the docking unit lights up amber. If the laptop is connected to the docking unit the power switch on the docking unit goes off.

5. I have removed, replaced the memory - no change, and done the same with the hard drive.

6. The power adapter when plugged in displays green, and the copper jack pin is undamaged.

Could anyone offer some advice as to what may be going on please? Could this be a CMOS battery failure? It just seems very odd that it should just switch off and refuse to turn itself back on.

Many thanks

    Good Morning Stephen

Thank you for contacting the community.

To be perfectly honest, you have more or less attempted all trouble shooting steps that we would advise. We would usually strip it back to more or less the motherboard, and power on, to see if any of the parts would be causing it.  In regards to the coin battery, I would say its a long shot, but here is the service manual to remove this:

    support.dell.com/.../coinbatt.htm

The service manual to remove all parts are as follows:

    support.dell.com/.../index.htm

Failing the system turning on after all troubleshooting, it would most likely point to the motherboard.

I hope this is of assistance to you Stephen.

    Regards

    Kevin

Kevin - thanks for your prompt reply.

If it is a motherboard failure and the computer is out of warranty then there isn't really any point getting it repaired because of the cost, which is a shame.

    Many thanks,

    Stephen
