Disk errors (running Windows XP)

My next door neighbor wanted me to try to help him out with his computer, he owns a Dell Latitude D505 [BIOS Revision A11] (running Windows XP) and he got two different errors. - I got some kind of battery error that it cannot be identified (which I can really careless) - Second error is that when I do the F1 to strike the computer to load and I get an error saying "disk drive read error". After the F1 strike, I hear some kind of a clicking sound within the computer following the error. I shut it down and he some other noise (can't describe) and when I did turn on the computer it said some kind of password is needed to access the HDD (this time I hear nothing) I just simply press "ENTER" three times and then I get this error "Primary hard disk drive 0 not found" Please help me. I'm trying to help my neighbor move his files from this old computer into his new computer.

Unfortunately it sounds like the hard drive has failed.  You can try mounting the hard drive in an external USB case (you'll need one for an EIDE drive, not the more common SATA drive) -- if that doesn't work (i.e., the drive is unreadable), then you'll need to consider whether data recovery is in order (there are companies that can recover data from even severely faulty drives, but the services will cost a minimum of a few hundred dollars - sometimes much more than that).

    Hi michael08081,

    Welcome to the community.

In addition to what  ejn63 suggested:

You can try reseating the hard-drive as, if it is not properly connected then also it can be undetected by the system. Please check the manual link below where you can find instruction for removing and re-installing the hard-drive :

Kindly perform these steps and let us know the results, so we can advise you further.

    Thanks and Regards
