erratic touchpad/pointer movement

I am having major problems woth my Inspiron 4000 touchpad. The pointer/cursor moves erratically and independently and often leaves me out of control of the keyboard. Any suggestions?

    Hi,

Replace the keyboard. This is a common fault in this model, there is a new keyboard less prone to this fault.

    Hi,

Try disabling the track stick on the keyboard from the mouse properties in the control panel. If you don't get the option to disable it, try downloading the latest input drivers from the dell support site and then disable it.

    Regards

Disabling the trackstick through the drivers will not always fix the problem. It can still interfere with cursor control. If your feeling game, you can cut the thin kb cable which runs from the kb to the mb. This controls the trackstick, and with it cut it will present no further problems. Although, keep in mind the trackstick will not work from then on. I would also cover the cut sections of cable to prevent shorting.
