Error Message
Hi,
I ran out the diagnostic that you can do when starting the computer.
On the scan disk it kept throwing up the error message OFOO 0228, can any one help ?
My laptop is only about 14 months old so I'm pretty sure its prob not anything too serious considering how much a paid for a Dell rather than a less model where you would expect this to happen, or am I wrong? Have a picked a model that does break often?

- So you are saying that Dells arent very good no matter what you pay?I did think that they were a good make but I must admit if you have to replace your hard drive after 15 months they cant be very good. Its funny its lasted long enough to run the warrent out. Thanks for the info I won't be buying another Dell & cant recommend them to anyone.
- Since upward of 75% of all notebook computers are made by just two Taiwan-based companies, regardless of the name on the outside, the same parts that will fail on HP, Sony, Gateway, eMachines, Toshiba, Apple, and a host of other named notebooks.
There's essentially no difference in reliability between notebook "brands", which is hardly surprising, since two companies make 75% of them, and just a handful of 4-5 other companies make the other 25%.
Dell didn't make your system - nor did it make the hard drive. They sold it to you, and whoever sells you your next system, will disappoint you equally if you're looking for perfect reliability.
Message Edited by ejn63 on 06-24-2007 12:50 PM - I didnt buy my hard drive from any of them, I bought it from Dell.If I was selling something I would try & make sure what I was selling worked, which Dell hasn't maybe just picked the cheapest or something maybe eh? & through it in, I wonder what other cheap parts are going to fail?
- Good luck with what you do buy - it'll come with a drive from one of the same six manufacturers every other notebook computer made, does.
Dell doesn't make drives - they use the same Seagate, WD, Samsung, Hitachi, Toshiba and Fujitsu drives everyone else does. - What I'm saying is that the chances of a hard drive failure are independent of the name on the notebook - all the drives are the same. You're no more or less likely to find your next notebook hard drive will fail with any other brand than you are with Dell.
As for the personal comments, they're not welcome. - foxwold, what diamond is trying to say is it is a marketing thing. who do you think makes parts for lawnmowers etc. only a couple of companies make them, just like filters for cars.....wix and purolator make most of them, just change the name on the outside....diamond is saying that there are only a handful of manufacturers who make hard drives and no mater if it is a dell, gateway, HP or what, the harddrive will come form one of these approximately 5 companies....duh

Run the Dell diagnotics (F12 at boot) - the extended test. Record the error and if you're still under warranty, report it to Dell support; they'll ship you a replacement drive. If you're out of warranty, match the drive type (EIDE or SATA) and you can buy a replacement; hard drives are inexpensive.
