Inspiron 5100 overheating
I have a Inspiron 5100. It overheats a lot close to 150F and i am unable to find anyone who can help me replace the Heat sink. Due to this overheating it shutsdown often. Also people like Bestbuy/Comp usa are unable help. Any of you facing similar problems can help?

Hello-I have recently posted about my Inspiron 5100 overheating as well. I took it into the local CIT on my campus and did a little guess-and-checking. At first I would say to clean out your fan by spraying in compressed air through the openings to the heatsink/fan assembly. When we took apart the laptop we noticed that, as the computer shuts off, the heat sink gets ridiculously hot compared to the air the fan seems to be blowing out. It would be the thermal grease connecting the heatsink, but otherwise you should try to replace your heatsink and fan assembly (under $30 at www.parts-people.com). Beyond that I am unsure what the problem is: I have yet to fix mine.Let me know how everything goes with the new assemby because I am willing to try anything. Hope that helps!tonebalone

Don't expect Dell to respond to out of warranty issues. And, yes, you can change your own heat sink. Be sure and use some high quality thermal compund such as Arctic Silver 5 between the CPU and heat sink. You can view or download the service manual here:- I removed the Heat sink assembly and cleaned it. I was not sure on where to apply the silver compound, so i generally applied it on the housing. Could anyone tell me where to apply the silver compound? There was no improvement in my Laptops performance , it continued to shutdown if my CPU works @100% Capacity (it also genrates tremendous heat at the same time) for more than 15 - 20mins. Does this mean the CPU or Hard drive is corrupted? Any diagnosis?Thanks

You should put the heat sink compound on the processor where it contacts the heat sink. For details on how to apply see http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htmThe 5100 uses a desktop processor, and runs hot. Hot enough, in fact, that numerous users have found that a chip on the motherboard becomes unsoldered from the board and causes premature failure. To me, running a desktop CPU in a laptop is similar to installing a Harley engine on a weed-eater. It works, but watch out you don't burn yourself.Montauk198

I have a
I5100 A32 bios
To clear my heating problems...(you'll need to take off the keyboard to get to the heatsink)
(1.)Blow out the Heatsink with cannedair not a air compressor(moisture duh)
(2.)goto http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/index.html and install that prog(I keep my fan on High)
(3.)Get the Pad with the fans from staples or officemax
(4.)try to custom install more fans- Ok, I've had my peepee spanked twice by the forum admin for mentioning HOW I got a FREE REPAIR of my overheating Inspiron 5100, but DELL fixed it for me free 3 years out of warranty after I mentioned that I was going to buy another laptop and that their dealing with my known overheating problem would help me decide whether or not to buy another DELL. They paid shipping for the transaction both ways, and they supplied the FEDEX box too. New heatsink and new motherboard were installed. Great machine,works fine now just can't talk here about how I got it fixed. BTW I bought another DELL. I will take emails from anybody that wants to know offline how I managed my problem in particular. If the admin takes this off I'm done trying to help the forum with this problem. pabobfin at yahoo dot com.
