Inspiron N5010 shuts down randomly

Hi All,

I have this weird shut down problem since 2 days. The laptop keeps shutting down randomly. When i first try to turn it on, it stays up to 10 mins and then shuts down. Next turn on durations are about 3-5 mins.

I thought it may be due to overheating so i downloaded speedfan and check the temperatures. They are all changing between 40-60 C. I bought a cooling pad but still shuts down. Also i kept getting this error "One of your disks need to be checked for compatability".

Then i took out all parts, cleaned the fans, and replaced all parts (hard drive, cmos battery, fan etc) again. But even after cleaning the fan the problem continues. Btw, the fan seems working fine, and the laptop is not hot at all.

Then i try a diagnostic at start by pressing f12. I got an 2000-0146 error on hard drive. Searched this error and it looks like the hard drive is malfunctioning. The laptop still shuts down during diagnostics. So i couldnt really finish the diagnostics anyway. Everything but Hard drive passed the test, but the test could go up to CPUs.

I also tried with and without the battery to check if this is a power problem, but in both cases the laptop shuts down.

So overheating or power does not really seem to be problem but i am not sure. As far as i think, a malfunctioning hard drive will not cause a shut down. I will definately buy a new hard drive, but first i need to know what causes the shut down.

Also, i have a lot of important information in the hard drive, but the problem is the laptop can only stay up to 10 mins, so i am not able to pull the data.

So any ideas about the shutting down problem and getting the data from the hard drive will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks yall in advance.

    Hi  macoskun,

    Welcome to the Community,

HDD error 2000-0146 can cause the system to shut down intermittently. Some corrupt software/application could also cause the system to shut down.It does not look system is overheating at all.Since the system is shutting down while running diagnostics,I would suggest you to replace the HDD as the  error code 2000-0146 indicates that the HDD needs to be replaced.

To check if the data can be retrieved you need to get  2.5" SATA external drive case, remove the HDD from the system, mount it to the external HDD case and connect it by USB to another system.

    Hope this helps,

    Thank You

    Roshan,

Thank you for your answer. I will try replacing the hard drive and see how it works. Thanks also for the external drive case idea.

One more question. I do not have a dell recovery disk, all is saved on hard drive. How would i be able to restore my system if i buy a new hard drive?

    Hi  macoskun,

You would need to have the Windows DVD to reinstall Windows on the new HDD.Drivers can be downloaded from www.support.dell.com (Drivers and Downloads). If you are in United States you can request for copy of back up cds using the link below :

    support.dell.com/.../backupcd_form

    Thank You
