keyboard problem

I recently inherited a Latitude cpt v laptop that was running windows 98.
I increased the ram to 256 and upgraded to XP.
When I bootup and enter my login information, the keyboard works fine.
After windows bootsup, the keys (7 8 9 0 u i o p j k l ; m and .) ,operate as if the function key was pressed.
If i plug an external keyboard in, it works just fine and then after I unplug it, the keyboard on the laptop works fine.
Keyboard properties say the keyboard is a standard 101/102 key or a microsoft natural keyboard and that it is plugged into the keyboard port.
I didn't use it very long on the 98 system to know for sure if the problem existed before I installed xp.
The guy that used it before me said he never had any keyboard problems.

Help!
