Loud beep and no drivers
My Lat X1 is running Vista Business. Whenever I push an incorrect button in an app, i get a loud beep. The system tray speaker icon says no speakers are installed, and has a red X in the bottom-right-hand corner of the icon. Device Manager has no sound or speaker entry and no yellow question marks. I know i originally had speakers. What do i do?

Dell does not support Vista on the X1 -- no Vista drivers.
Vista does not have a built-in driver for the type of audio on the X1 motherboard, which is the old AC97 type instead of the current HD audio type, so you have to install an audio driver yourself. So I wonder:
Did you just recently install Vista? Have you ever had a Vista audio driver on your laptop? The driver would be named Sigmatel.

Try this:
Download the Sigmatel R99254 driver. Unpack it but cancel the installation process.
It will unpack the files and store them in a folder on the hard drive at c:\Dell\drivers\R99254, and that folder will have a subfolder named WDM.
Open Device Manager and expand System devices near the bottom. Find the PCI Device entry with a ? next to it (or if that is not there then look for "Multimedia Audio Controller") . Go to the properties and choose to update the driver. Choose to manually find the driver and don't let Windows look for it. Browse to c:\Dell\drivers\R99254\WDM
With any luck it should detect some new hardware and one of them should be the Sigmatel.
(The Sigmatel R99254 driver is the one for your laptop. It is compatible with XP or Vista.)
