M1730 Upgrade
Has anybody Upgraded the M1730 to Windows XP from Vista? How about a rundown on the problems encountered, if any?

...which won't work. I've tried to install Windows 2003 Server. After hitting it requested me to insert the driver disk into the Floppy drive A: .... which I couldn't.
I had prepared a bootable CD-ROM with the drivers on the standard track as well as the Floppy emulation track. But to no avail. I hit the key many times but Windows 2003 didn't accept the CD-ROM.- Im using RAID 0 with Windows Vista Ultimate perfectly fine.When installing Vista, at the partition screen, click the 'Load Drivers' link, and load your Matrix Storage driver from a USB stick.Ive created a video on setting up RAID here:

quick question. do you bother backing up the recovery partition or not? i never had a dell before, can't decide if it's worth keeping it or not. I am planning to install XP instead of Vista- HiYeh just follow the instructions in my video ;) I had replied to your comment, but I will reply here also!You need the Matrix Storage Manager drivers. Its on your Dell CD. Or its easier to go to the Dell site and get the driver from there instead. Once you have it (its a bunch of files) stick the files in the root of a USB drive. So get an empty USB drive and put the files onto that, without putting them in any folders etc.Then when installing Windows XP, at the beginning of the installation you will see a message like 'Press F8 to install 3rd party SCSI or RAID drivers'. Press F8 and direct it to the USB drive, and it will pick the driver up and install it. Them continue with the installation as normal.Hope my video was of help ;)EDIT: By the way if you still struggle to find the drivers, give me a shout and I can email them across to you, or put them in my webspace for you to download if you wish?

good stuff, i like the sound of that much better. funnily enough, i found your video on youtube today lol. very nice info, thanks for that. i left a comment there too, cos i have trouble finding the raid driver for some reason. what i want to do is install 2 200gb seagate momentus and set it up like you have done. nice coincidence ;) now i don't have to use my brain thanks to you hehe anyway, the raid driver, is it part of the matrix storage manager downloadable from dell? forgot to add that i want to install XP Pro SP2 instead of Vista thank you, nina

that's perfect, thank you for the info. i had downloaded them already hoping they would do the trick. will receive my 2nd hard drive tomorrow (they ship the 1730 with 200gb momentus drives now so only needed to buy one of then) and will give it a go over the weekend. one more question, then i will leave you be lol. do you use the mediadirect software at all? not sure what i should use that button on the laptop for otherwiseninotschka

thank you very much for the help. my hard drive arrived so i just have to get home from work and get a move on. i will let you know how it goes, and follow your video of course ;)thanks again, wish me luck.nina- No I left Media Direct. It creates a seperate 2GB partition for itself, and was something I probably would very rarely use anyway - so much so, that I can just boot into windoes and use Media Player or Media Centre instead anyway. Hence I didnt install it.Remember that if you do install it, boot off of the CD BEFORE you install Windows, since it will create the necessary partitions. You then stick the CD back in and install the software once Windows is installed.

I have no problems with missing drivers for XP-32
Runs even faster + 1000 3dmark 03
Runs perfectly !
But i did installed Vista again,
Because i can't use my Flash Cache Turbo Memory card under XP.
No DX10 with the M8700GT under XP
Tip : Before you install XP change your bios setting from
AhCi to ATA,
otherwise you'l have to use a seperated raid driver while
installing from cdrom/xp
