MSCONFIG Settings

I am triing to speed up the start up of mt i8600, and I have a few questions about the MSCONFIG settings.  I installed Symantec System Works, and Internet Security Pro last week.  I am not sire if I am entirely happy with them.  The System works doesn't seem too bad, but the internet security seems to get in the way alot.  I am wondering what I can remove some parts from these programs in the services, and start up to make start up quicker.

Question #1

Can anyone tell me what services are safe to remove from the services tab in the MSCONFIG?  I have hidden the Microsoft services.  Symantec System works Pro, and Internet Security Pro look like hogs.  Is it possible to remove some of these services, and still have them active under the start up tab?

Question #2

What do I need to leave in the start up tab?  I have unchecked everything except my Hot sync manager, and i8fangui.  One thing that seems to stay though is (ctfmon).  Does anyone know what this is?

actually  you don't need ANYTHING in the startup list to run the system.  There are a few programs that you need to leave to make the system function correctly.

http://www.rockymountain.com/ref_startup.htm  or http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk are 2 great lists of startup items definitions.  As for the services i havent found a list of those yet.

This basically explains every startup service in Windows XP:

    Thanks kormath and billy jingles,

I will look into the links that you both left.  If you hear anything about the services let me know.
