Poor Games Performance on D830 with Nvidia 140M
I'm using a Latitude D830 with an Nvidia 140M graphics card. Games seem to work at first sight, *but* after a while, the frame rate drops down to a non acceptable value (about 0,5 fps). At the same time, the cooler turns to maximum speed. It seems as if this causes the Nvidia card to slow down immediatly and disable 3D acceleration support. This behaviour is *very* annoying. I updated my business laptop to this combination (D830 + Nvidia card) especially to be able to play games. And now gaming performance is even *lower* than on my old D810! It seems as if the latest drivers from Dell alleviated the problem a little bit, but it is still there. Does anybody know how to prevent this Nvidia card from slowing down to inacceptable frame rates? Thanks, Waldgeist
- My RAM is 2GB, and the problem even occurs with older games like GTA San Andreas or Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow. I don't think that the notebook has too little gaming power, because everything works fine for the first minutes. But after a while, framerate drops down, just as if the computer gets too hot and forces the graphics card to throttle its power.
- it is possible it is overheating but usually you would experience shutdowns when it comes to that, however that does not mean that could not be the cause make sure you are playing on a flat surface not your lap, bed etc. Also do you try and play online? or have something that stays connected to the net IE, Limeware, AIM,MSN etc?
- Artillery, I'm playing on a flat surface (actually, I'm using the monitor stand and port replicator from Dell). The problem also occurs when I'm not online. And it depends on the current cooler speed. If the cooler is quiet, games work perfectly well. As soon as the cooler reaches its maximum velocity, framerate breaks down immediately.
