Recurring video issues--Radeon 9700

My Inspiron 9100 is currently being repaired for the similar issues described by so many forum users--i.e., 3D games will freeze/lock up for no apparent reason. Ran a clean install, updated both motherboard and video BIOS, loaded the latest Dell driver, updated Doom 3 to latest patch, still no go. It will either freeze within seconds of loading, or will play for 5-10 minutes, and then hard lock, forcing a hard shut down and reboot.

Question is--if there are SO MANY 9700 series notebooks (9100 and XPS) suffering from this problem, what is the deal? Is it a design flaw in the notebooks? Is the part supplier for the video PCB's printing bad circuitry? Does Dell need to get off of their fat backsides and write a new driver?

I haven't had it all that long, and WILL be returning the system if it is not repaired successfully. In the mean time, I will be trying out the Omega drivers, or others if necessary, but it is A SAD SAD TALE if the WORLD'S LARGEST PC SUPPLIER cannot build a stable system and write a driver for it on their own. I can't for the life of me understand why all of us PAYING CUSTOMERS are forced to go to OFFSITE just to find a working driver. Michael Dell, your company currently owns 16 percent of the entire world wide PC market, SURELY YOU CAN DO BETTER THAN THIS.

Try disabling the write combining. That can usually help with lockup errors.

I spoke with the tech department about my problem and found THE solution to my problem. It's not something you would expect so it's worth a try.

I re-seated my RAM. I took out both cards and then replaced them as best I could making sure the lined up nicely as I snapped them back into place. Doing this fixed all of my problems. I haven't had anything freeze on me since and all is well.

Give it a go, even try reseating your other cards like minipci, etc. It must have been a bad connection creating timming issues or even other errors.

    Cheers

    Hey guys

I had a 9100 with the 9700 card before i purchased my XPS with the 9800 and have been following post and problems on both machines for some while now.

And figuired i will add some helpful tip's reseating and swaping the ram was already mentioned also a lot of the time 9100 and XPS owners think they are having driver issues when infact it is heat related a lot of gamers install the 18k fan tool which only controls 2 fan's the XPS and 9100 have 3 fan's so does the 18 k fan tool prevent the 3rd fan from operateing properly? To check for fan failures you press Fn +Z+R which will bring up the thermal display page. Also if you are expeirencing a drop in fps feel the  ram cover under your laptop if it is hot thats your culprit. It will seem like driver issues when a good part of the time it is heat related.I have a targus cooling pad the one you can fold it in half or use it flat.I use it folded and it props up my laptop in the back and puts it on a angle which improves aif flow. And i also cut holes in the cooling pad where my fans and ram cover are and it make a big difference. Good Luck guys hope this helps you out.
