resolution difficulties

I just got a new monitor for my laptop and it will only allows 2 resolution settings that I am able to view my screen. 1024 * 768 and 800*600 ...... i have tried removing video drivers and reinstalling ... updating drives ... initially i wasn't able to adjust resolution to only those settings now i can change it to 2 higher settings but i can't see my desktop icons on either setting. it is as if they are there but inches to the left of my screen which i can't see (sorta like connecting to second monitor?). any suggestions?

I just signed up for this forum to hopefully get this questions asked. I have a 3 year old NEC LCD1765 and can only get it to display 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768, not the native 1024 x 1280. I've chatted online with Dell tech support twice and got nowhere--they either treat me like an idiot or say my screen is defective (it works on my desktop). I also sent an email to tech support and received an equivalently useless response.

By the way, I know that the notebook can display higher than 1024 x 768. I also have a 20'' monitor and the laptop displays the native 1680 x 1050 with no problems. In fact, I didn't even had to install drivers--it was all set to go. Seems as though it simply doesn't want to display 1024 x 1280.

    No response yet?

Update: Dell is currently addressing my notebook's resolution issue via email but at this point no solution has been given.

Dell has officially given up on trying to resolve this display issue.  First, they lied to me by saying the video card doesn't support a higher resolution than 768*1024 (wrong--I tried it with a 1050*1680 monitor).  Then they defaulted to their generic "we don't offer support for 3rd party hardware" statement.  However, they will gladly charge me to look into the issue.  Thanks for the offer but...NO!  This is obviously a problem with the notebook as my monitor works flawlessly with other PCs.

Anyhow, I'd like to thank Dell's tech support for treating me like an idiot and lying to me.  You've made a lasting impression with me and I can confidently say I'll never buy another PC from you.  In fact, I just closed my preferred account minutes ago to formally sever ties with your company.

I have the exact same problem you described and it has happened to two different screens, a 26" hdtv, and a samsung 913n.

Its pathetic that the laptop just do as advertised, honestly its almost grounds for refund as false advertisement.
