Trouble with WIFI

I recently got an Inspiron 1545.  I have an 'office' downstairs but I couldn't get a connection.  I got a new router at about the same time so I thought it might be that.  However, then I went to my daughter's house and had the same problem; couldn't access the internet from a few rooms away.  She suggested I get a 'booster'.  However, when I looked on-line at Staples.com, I didn't see anything and when I typed it on the internet it seemed like the ones available were for people who wanted to pirate free wifi.  Is there a product out there that could help me or is there some way I can configure my laptop for a better connection?  I have access about twenty feet away (excellent) but as I move further it decreases.  I am not very technical and any assistance is greatly appreciated.  Thank you - New Member.

I would make sure that I could get a connection by wired ethernet. There could be a firewall or something else on your laptop that is blocking access. You need resolve those issues first.

Does the wireless work at all when close to the router?

If so, then the first thing to do is try changing the router channel. Try channels 1, 5 and 11. Other wireless equipment can drastically affect performance.
