Usb3 disk transfer stall
Hi
I have a shiny new inspiron 7559, everything updated, nothing weird done to the system (windows 10, the stock install even minus the junkware I don't need), etc.
For some reason a lot of usb disks fail to work: transfers stall and interrupt more than they actually transfer.
In more detail:
I have 3 plain disks of various age and type (one's a hybrid sshd or something). I also have a few ready-made usb3 disks (i.e. disks in a prefab casing). Lastly, I have a plain naked usb3/sata adapter, and a few usb3/sata adapters with a casing (the so-called full enclosures).
When I plug the disks into the naked adapter and test a large transfer, everything works flawlessly. The regular pre-assembled disks have also always worked flawlessly.
For some reason however, when I put the plain disks into empty enclosures I got from my favorite store, I get the problem described above: transfers stall completely after merely a few megabytes and general write speed goes as low as 2MB/s when they do work.
I initially thought the enclosures were defective, so I returned them and got different ones from a different brand. With the new ones, the exact same thing happened. And now today, I brought those back to the store too and bought new ones from yet another brand. Exactly. The same. Problem.
I then got fed up with it and plugged these malfunctioning disks/enclosures into another, 3 year old laptop: not a flaw to be found.
I've tried reinstalling intel's silly "rapid storage" and "serial i/o" drivers, but of course to no avail (honestly, I've never seen any of intel's software actually do anthing useful or agreeable).
Since my disks and all my enclosures are proven to work just fine, as are my usb ports, I have to conclude there's some sort of incompatiblity between an alarming number of plain harddrive enclosures and this laptop's usb ports.
Could anyone point me in the right direction to figure this out, please?
Could dell perhaps look into this too? For a machine I paid almost a month's net salary for, I expected better than to face one ridiculous issue atfer another.

I'm not sure what's different now but all of a sudden it's working for me...
Things I remember doing:
- uninstalling as much intel bloat as possible, especially their I/O manipulators
- changed my antivirus, though I don't believe it was a factor
- turned off power management on my usb ports in device manager
A reboot may also have been a critical part of it because I clearly remember simply turning off power management was not enough.
It's definitely a 7559
Edit: actually now it's just working slightly better but it's still not stable... It works fine with the regular disk, but the hybrid disk basically still has the same problem, though its transfer speed does slowly increase to a lot of MB/s before crashing after a few seconds now.

Glad you don't have the same issue I am then, although a random working port is just as bad as one that doesnt work at all.
It seems we may have similar ubs chipsets, so you may still be dealing with a driver issue. Unfortunately, windows 10 uses its own USB3 driver and dell does not supply one.
One bummer workaround you can do is make them all operate at USB2 speeds. If you plug a USB3 device in , but not all the way, it will connect as USB2. Slide it in really slow until you hear the plug in sound. If you hear the sound and the plug is still about 1/8 out, it connected as USB2.
I wish I had more to give you, this problem truly ***, and Dell should supply updated drivers. Sadly, I doubt this will ever happen.
I have read many forums on USb3 issues, and all remedes seems to point to modifying power settings for the USB(didnt work for me), change settings in Bios(I got none), uninstalling and reinstalling drivers(didnt work for me).
Only thing that work: Using a TrueCrypt volume and or Installing windows 7 :(

Maybe Someone else can bring some more info?
***, now some of my usb sticks are doing the same thing. I contacted support about this and their reply was basically the expected "we'll replace it under warranty but it's not like we care enough to actually investigate, check our drivers, etc". I can't not have a laptop for the time it takes to send it back and get it replaced though, so replacing is not an option for me.

I feel your pain. I know this is a driver issue and not hardware. What pisses me off is Dell knows about this and there are thousands of these laptops out there with faulty USB3 ports. I think most people dont have USB3 devices and so never experience this.
I So regret buying this laptop. No Scratch that...I regret buying dell and will never again. HP has been so good to me, there hardware is far superior to dells, not to mention drivers that actually WORK!

Thanks to dells lack of dedication to its buyers, I will be left with a laptop running an unsupported version of windows soon. Upgrading to windows 8 or 10 will result in non functioning USB3 ports.
Never again will I buy Dell. HP is the way to goI'd just like to repeat that this is *still* an issue today and it's starting to *** up even the most basic tasks like backups or disc syncs. Thanks a lot, dell, for the still non-existent replies, driver updates or general solutions at all. Never putting my money in you anymore and never gonna forgive you for letting this junk pass your QA.

Just curious, was it a 7559, or "5759"?
I have a Dell Inspirion 17" 5759, brand new, one month old and I cannot transfer "TO" usb3 AT ALL
I can Read files from a USB3 device but cannot Write to them.
I get errors saying the location no longer exists, etc,
If this is what is happening to you, Its a DELL driver issue. I posted here and they never let it post the forum! I paid them money, they should at least let me voice my opinion about a product they are at fault for!!
Good luck trying to get dell to own up on it as the port physically is working fine, Basic tech support will say its fine and you need to call software(which you have to pay for). So not only do you get to pay for a bunk laptop, you get to pay more money to talk to someone even though its thier issue.
Anyways, there is Hope :)
If you can find a copy of TrueCrypt that alows you to create encrypted volumes. Reading and writing to an encrypted volume works flawlessly.
Also, downgrading to windows 7, the USb3 port also works flawlessly.
I have tried virtually everything under the sun to get this port to function as it was designed to do. It was by accident I stumbled across the TrueCrypt volume work around.
Other than this, We have to wait for Dell to own up to their mistake and bring out an updated driver for all those who bought these computers with these faulty drivers
