Rick,
I haven't re-installed/installed OS in my laptop.
When i launched "Webcam Central" ,an error message is getting displayed at the bottom saying 'No supported webcam connected'.
I checked my device manager, it didn't show any webcam drivers under Imaging Devices.
I believe there could be some hardware issues. Please let me know how to get it resolved.
And FYI, my warranty got expired as of march-2013.
Thanks for you help,
Prabhakaran.
Prabhakaran,
I have had the webcam gone missing for myself.
Not knowing the model you have, the plastic bezel in most models pops loose, when you get your fingernails under it. Some models have it attached with screws. At the top, near the webcam is a plug. unplug the webcam and the plug it back in. You may have to take a couple of the screws out that hold the screen.
It comes loose there, it's usually where you open the laptop.
If you need instructions, please provide the model of your computer.

I am having the similar issues. In Dell Webcam Central it tells me "no supported webcam connected" I haven't installed or updated anything to my knowledge that would affect my drivers. I have an XPS L401X. How do I go about double checking to be sure things are working before I take my screen apart...if that's how to fix my webcam and get it functioning again?

Hi Sara,
Please share the operating system installed.
Primarily, ensure that the webcam is detected on your computer. If it is, you may try to uninstall and re-install webcam application. You may follow the steps below to check webcam in 'Device Manager':
• Press Windows key + R --> Type ‘devmgmt.msc’ --> Hit Enter.
• Under “Imaging Devices”, you will find the 'Webcam' listed.
• If the webcam is listed, right click and uninstall.
• Restart computer and see if it makes any difference.
If the webcam is not listed, you may uninstall the USB root hubs and check if it makes any difference. To uninstall USB Root Hubs:
• In 'Device Manager' > Expand ‘Universal Serial Bus controllers’
• From the list, look for ‘USB Root Hub’
• Right click, choose ‘Uninstall’, choose ‘Ok’
• Uninstall all ‘USB Root Hub’ listed
• Wait for all the drivers to get uninstalled
• Restarted the computer
• Restarting the computer will install ‘USB Root Hub’s automatically on the computer
If the issue persists, you may also try pinching the area near the webcam on the LCD to check for any loose connections. On the other hand, If the webcam is detected under “Imaging Devices”, you may uninstall and re-install the 'Webcam' application from control panel and see if it works. To uninstall open 'Programs and Features' by clicking the Start button -- > Control Panel -- > Programs and Features --> Select a program then click Uninstall.

Brabhakaran,
Did you recently install/reinstall the operating system? If yes, did you install the Dell System Software(if applicable) and the chipset drivers first? If not, the rest of the drivers will fail to install. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct
Windows 7/8 is supposed to provide the webcam drivers for most Dell computers. If you system needs webcam drivers, go to Drivers & Downloads enter your service tag, then select your operating system. If your system needs webcam drivers, they'll be listed under Input.
(Windows 8)How to make the webcam work with help from this youtube. You have to open the Camera app first, and then click Settings on the charm bar to see where you can give the app permission to use the webcam.
Try reading...
Troubleshooting the Dell Webcam and Dell Webcam Central Software
You can try this file, also known as Dell Webcam Central.
Create a new unrestricted user account and try the webcam. Did the webcam work?
If yes, log out and log back in to your account and try the webcam. Did the webcam work?
If no, then the webcam became detached from the motherboard, usually near the webcam
Is your computer is under warranty?
