Windows NT Security Rollup

Earlier posts have documented a problem with the post SP6a security rollup hosing the Latitude ATI video drivers. This invites a couple of questions.
a. What fix in the security rollup is causing the problem?
b. Does Dell test Microsoft security patches after they are released?
c. If so, should I wait for some notification from Dell that they are safe?
d. Is Microsoft aware of the problem?

Thanks for any info you can provide.

We have the same problem on Lattitude CPXh, CPXJ, and C600 models. I reported the problem to Dell, they were unaware of it. I have a case open with Microsoft on this issue. They feel it is a driver or hardware problem. The same ATI video is used on some IBM laptops and they do not have this problem. I tried using the driver supplied by IBM and that also fails on the Dell. It maybe a bios issue.

I applied the SP 6a and then the Security Rollup to a Latitude CPt V that had NT4.0 + SP5. As soon as I re-booted the machine it came back on VGA mode that asked for a new reboot to upgrade Video drievers. This was totally useless, a waste of time. Then I tried downloading the latest version of ATI drivers from Dell, the result was even worse, I got a blue screen during Windows startup indicating a problem in one of the ATI drivers. I backedf out the Security Roll up and then upgraded the System BIOS to the latest version posted in Dell's Web Site. This worked fine the system is now running smoothly.

I found Microsoft's SP6a fouled up the Dell ATI drivers on a CPx too.

Has anyone heard of a solution or a fix (apart from reinstaling NT4 without the SP6a pack) and the Dell ATI video drivers?

    bump...

I am providing support for a Latitude C600 laptop running Windows NT 4.0 and the same thing happened with me.

Unfortunately I did not roll back the update right away because I figured the video drivers had been stepped on and I finished doing all of the NT 4.0 security fixes.

After that I downloaded the latest drivers for the Latitude C600 (R52697.EXE) and installed them.  When the laptop rebooted it sits at the blue loading screen and after 8 dots it sits there.  I tried the last known good configuration and nothing.

Fortunately I was able to get to the Novell Login Prompt in VGA mode and remotely access the registry and disable the service loading the problem video drivers.  Next I tried the 3 previous drivers and the next newest one caused the same problem and the other two did not show up as being correct after reboot.

This is very frustrating when the security patches should be applied, but it messes up the video and when I installed the Dell drivers it stops NT from working.

I have tried to roll back security fixes to get back to a point where it works, but after the third rollback NT no longer will boot.  I will try the BIOS update to see if that will do the trick.  Any other info would be great - especially from Dell.

    Thanks,

    Matt

Dell seems to have fouled up again. They have never been fond of NT4 despite the little stickers on their machines. They cannot even provide a means for using MapPoint of Streets and Trips on the Latitude CPiA laptop using the NT4 operating system. But why focus on the past. Just keep buying Dell and improve your knowldge of their off-shore support. Good luck.
