XPS M1730 - Restore
Hi,
I got my XPS at the start of the week and overall i am extremely happy with it. However, i was a little unimpressed with it's performance with a certain game *cough* Crysis *cough* so i decided to browse the internet to try and find ways of boosting the performance (as i know it is a very capable machine and that it shouldn't have been struggling the way it was). I downloaded all the latest drivers etc. leading to no improvements. I then read on a forum that re-installing a *clean* version of Windows on it to remove all the bloatware that dell adds can help. I did this without realising the full extent of all the things i would lose in the process.
Now, i've managed to restore the majority of things back to how they were when the laptop arrived but some certain things are still not the same or not there (Windows Aero for example). I'm extremely annoyed with myself for tampering with what was fine in the first place and for being naive, so i though I'd seek help or advice on if there is a way for me to completely restore the laptop to how it was when it arrived so I can just forget this whole situation and get back to how things were. Any suggestions?
Ok, this is looking promising, I have found the Factory image that you mentioned. Before i go ahead and do that though I would appreciate if you could tell me exactly what it will do. Will I have to re-install Windows and everything (such as all the Dell apps and drivers) or will it simply just re-load everything to being how it was when i pressed the "power" button for the first time when i unpackaged it (it auto sets up Windows and all the apps are there already)? I realise that any of the other programs that i have installed will be deleted.

It restores it to exactly how it was when you received it from Dell - i.e. complete with all the drivers/apps which were pre-installed.
A restoration wipes your hard drive though, so make sure you backup anything important, before proceeding.
And after the restoration is complete, you should check for any driver updates in the downloads section for your laptop on the Dell website ;)

The factory image that came with your machine should still be on the D: drive unles you got rid of it when you formatted your drive. Otherwise you should be able to Press F8 when your system is starting up and use the "Repair your computer" menu to do a Dell Factory Image Restore. Once you login, it's usually the last option on the list at the very bottom.
If you don't see that option, but your D: drive is intact. There is another way if you boot from your Vista disk and select "Repair your computer." Click on the command prompt and follow the instructions below:
Type the following lines, pressing after each line.
path d:\windows;d:\windows\system32
d:
CD Tools
PCRestore
This will start the restore process. Enjoy! :smileyhappy:
