E2313H, curiosity, issues

I've have a Dell E2313H monitor. Two actually. Why is it that my Dell computer sometimes will only recognize it as "generic" (can't remember the actual term it reads). For example, upon restarting, the resolution is all out of whack and won't even allow me to change it!  For bonus points, is it possible that whatever causes this is actually causing my computer to crash? Weirdness is afoot. Thanks!

    Our users will need more data before they can assist with these 8 year old E2313H =

    * What specific PC model?
    * What operating system?
    * What video card or onboard GPU?
    * List all of the video out ports on the video card or onboard GPU?
    * How are the monitors currently connected to the video card or onboard GPU video out ports?

    Gasp!  Are you calling my monitors old?!  This problem has been plaguing me ever since I plugged 'em in all those years ago.  Dell Optiplex 790, Windows 7 64, connected to whatever's onboard (Intel HD Graphics?), via a lone VGA.
