We purchased two U2713HM in office for use with Laptops.
Our laptops have only HDMI graphic interfaces as well as most of laptops. But when we connected displays via HDMI interface, we have maximum resolution in 1920x1200px, any attempt to change the HDMI cable on expensive 1.3 ver. or 1.4 ver. and (HDMI-DVI-D) adapters for DVI-D connection, are failed.
Actuallity, no one of the manufactures laptops no have DVI-D interface, how do we get resolution in 2560x1440px? Now it is more than $1400 wasted.
P.S. Tested on: Win7, Win8, OS X. with cables: HDMI 1.3, HDMI 1.4, Adapter HDMI-DVI-D, Adapter MiniDisplay-DVI-D, Adapter MiniDisplay-HDMI, Adapter HDMI-VGA, Cable DVI-D - HDMI 1.4. NO ANY RESULTS! How to help us?
The HDMI is working as designed. HDMI is a video mode and not a graphics mode. Depending on the video card, the highest resolutions HDMI can do is 1920x1080 or 1920x1200. To get the higher resolutions, the source video card port would have to be DVI or VGA.
Yes, I know, but VGA not support resolution in 2560x1440px, its very old technology... Actuality..., I'm not sure, but maybe there is a Mini DisplayPort - DisplayPort cable to connect the 2713HM directly to the MacBook air/pro 2012 without any adapters, and it will probably work, but there is no evidence of this.
This information supplied by DELL-Chris M is incorrect.
According to the HDMI 1.4 standards. Maximum resolution for HDMI 1.4 is a 4k resolution or 4096 × 2160p at 24 Hz.
So claiming that the problem for U2713HM monitors is at the graphics-card level is false, as Dell limited the display itself to not run above 1080p resolution on the HDMI-interface.
We bought three of these monitors and beforehand made sure that we tripple checked that our laptops had the HDMI 1.4 interface as that's requried to go above the 1080p resolution but later ending up finding out, the expensive way mind you, that these displays didn't work on HDMI in the advertised resolution of 2560x1440.
You can override the resoultion in the monitor by simply force-feeding it a higher resoultion f.ex. 2560x1440@30Hz and the screen will display this without problems, albeit 30Hz is a bit slow but works fine for normal office-work. Not recommended for video and gaming tho. (Note: This may affect your warranty.)
I find how to fix this problem. One firm in Australia sells cables, it's miniDisplay (Thunderbolt) - Display port cable. U just plug it... and no have problems any more. Price about 20EUR
