Why So Long?

One of the reasons I debated coming back to Dell, just to buy a 2nd monitor, was some bad press I had read about orders (other than a complete PC build) taking so long to ship.  Well, I thought I would give it a try anyhow and order a 19" SP1908 flat panel monitor.  Nothing fancy, just a regular 19 inch monitor.  Any one of the brands at the local Best Buy, Costco or Staples would have done well cost wise and functionaly but I wanted to keep my desk top all Dell.  Well now I am caught in the "order and wait" game.  Ordered almost 2 weeks ago, it was to ship by 7-15 and arrive by 7-18.  Now it is scheduled to ship 7-20 and arrive 7-27.  Why does it take so long to get something like a monitor?  I really like Dell but I wish I had bought a monitor locally.

Thanks Chris, I normally would not be in a rush but I leave the end of the month on a medical mission in Panama.  I thought I ordered in time for the monitor to arrive before I departed.  There is probably still time but it is on the edge now.

    All,

There is a manufacturer backlog on all panels. It is beyond our control.

Just got back from a trip.  Had a automated voice mail from Dell that FTC regulations required them to notify me that (yet) another change in the ship date to 7/27.  I am required now to notify Dell that I accept the new date prior to the original ship date (7/15 , how can I do that?) or the order will be automatically cancelled.  This is what frustrates me with Dell.  I have had problems in the past with Dell where the right hand doesn't know what the other hand is doing.  It doesn't matter if it is sales, customer service or financial services.  Why didn't Steve in late June, or Shanna in early July tell me there was a delay in monitor manufacturing?  I may have been more inclined to still place the order and wait or order from Dell later.  I absolutely hate being told something will ship to me within 1-5 days then being put on hold for 2 months.  I don't know why I would do it but if i knew for absolutely sure the monitor would now ship on the 27th I would continue the order.  If there were a customer service rep that I could talk to that would be able to tell me how likely the new date is good, I would wait.

Chris, would you cancel or go with a July 27th ship date?  Based on what you know or what you can find out?  Thanks

After 1 hour 45 minutes, I am giving up.  Not able to get a response by phone, email or chat.

Thanks Chris, but I guess it is more fun working on existing monitor problems, and it looks like a lot of them, then to bother with something that hasn't even been built yet.  I am off to another country now to help people myself.  If there is a box from dell on my porch when I get back fine, if not, fine also.

    Peace!

Hve now been on the phone for 1 hour and 15 minutes waiting for a customer rep to come on the line.  Dell said to call this number to let verify if I want to have the order to remain open.  If I do not respond the order will be automatically canceled.

The call is now up on the office speaker system and a pool has started as to how long it will take for a customer rep to come on the phone.  The person holding 1 hour 20 minutes has already lost!
