Backup To Disk Newbie

Hello All.

Thanks for taking the time to assist.

I just switched to Networker and we are using backup to disk option.

Here is what I have.

on the networker server I have a lun that is dedicated for the backups.
I have a folder labled Dev_01

This is set as my 1st device.

Is it better to make multiple devices deignated for different weeks, days or servers?

I am assuming the software knows what data goes to what server if you need to restore.

Thanks,

Any startup information would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,

You can configure your Dev_01 folder as an Advanced File Type Device ¿ AFTD (assuming that you have the license for Disk Backup option). AFTD devices are not usually the final target of your save sets. The common practice is that you backup to a disk volume and then stage to a tape. So you better keep your LUN as one AFTD volume.

You should first devise a backup strategy and then configure your backup environment accordingly. Save sets are segregated based on different criteria (group, client, save set, and level) through media pools. And NetWorker sends backup streams to different media based on pool configuration.

For more details you can download Administration Guide for your version of NetWorker from http://powerlink.emc.com.

    Regards...

If you are using an advanced file type device (AFTD) there is probably no benefit in splitting your data up - Networker's staging should ensure data is moved off to enable the drive to have space available
