I know that NW 7.5 did not properly support VSS in Win 2008 R2, however, I am running 7.6 build 142 on both server and client and still getting these errors:
(1)
c:\windows\system32\dhcp\backup ERROR: VSS failed to get comp=BCD FileGroup list, writer=ASR Writer, error=0x80070008: Not enough storage is available to process this command.
c:\windows\system32\dhcp\backup in directives
c:\windows\system32\dhcp\backup 7154:save: Unable to set up VSS filesystem directives. Failed to back up c:\windows\system32\dhcp\backup.
(2)
VSS SYSTEM FILESET:\ VSS BCD BOOT FILES - ERROR: Could not open dir = \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy133\boot\
It seems like NW 7.5.2 works with Win2008 R2, but not NW 7.6 Build 142..., but I really do not want to downgrade my installation!
For some reason people still see this as downgrade (on client side), but it is not. What EMC is doing is a bit confusing approach if you do not fanatically follow what is going on, but let's just say that each SP brings new features and these features might be or not be part of different code trees.
For example, old and now out of support tree was 7.4.x tree.
Then you have: 7.5.x and 7.6.x. 7.5SP2 brought support for win2k8r2 (backup), SP3 brought few new things in other areas and SP4 is under beta now also contributing some at least one new feature.
Version 7.6.0 brought few new things in VCB area (and some others), SP1 has been focussed on DD while SP2 is VADP (and recently this has been extended for additional testing to commit 2 new features).
So it all comes down to feature set you need - sometimes this is client side based and sometimes this is server side based. What is important is to keep in mind date when release was made. This gives you an idea about relationships. For example (I will focus on GA releases only):
- 7.4.4 - 12.12.2008
- 7.4.5 - 30.09.2009
- 7.5.0 - 22.05.2008
- 7.5.1 - 30.03.2009
- 7.5.2 - 22.02.2010
- 7.5.3 - 14.06.2010
- 7.6.0 - 20.11.2009
- 7.6.1 - 24.09.2010
Would going from 7.5.1 to 7.4.5 be an downgrade? Not at all
Obviously, each version above has its own feature set and sub releases (patches released once per month). So 7.5.1 ended with 7.5.1.10, 7.5.2 with 7.5.2.4, etc. Relying on number of release only and think in terms what is old and what is new might (and will) lead to wrong decisions and most likely installing code with less stability in it. My rule of thumb is not to install NW core client before it has reached at minimum X.Y.Z.3 release. As for feature set, I go lowest as I can - at the moment that would be 7.5.x tree. My upgrade from 7.4.x went to 7.5.2.4 as that was the version I did tests with. Now, I moved to latest release within 7.5.x which is 7.5.3.3 and only because I had to address issue with nsrjobdb (still remains to be seen if this is fixed or not).

In addition, make sure you have all the latest VSS patches from Microsoft
