Windows client backup to VTLU

I've recently started working with the VTLU capability of our NS502 Celerra as an alternative to backing up directly to an advanced filesystem from Networker. I'm able to perform full NDMP backups direct from the Celerra file systems, but I'm still having trouble backing up my Windows Servers to the VTLU.

I'm reading two different pieces of information that have me confused. Some documentation reads that VTLU's can perform NDMP backups only, which in my mind means it's not possible to back up a Windows Server through the Networker client. However, I'm also reading that a VTLU is indistinguishable from a "normal" tape library where Networker is concerned, which means I should be able to back up any type of client to it.

Can anyone please shed some light regarding the backup of Windows Servers to a Celerra based VTLU?

Thanks in advance,
--Jeff

I do not have experience with Celerra VTL, but you must differentiate two types of VTLs:
    - those standalone VTLs (in EMC world that would be CDL)
    - those integrated with some HW

In your case you have VTL integrated with Celerra itself which I have no idea what capabilities have, but it is possible that you can only backup Celerra on it. You should check that on Celerra forum as it is related to Celerra configuration:

If confirmed you can have Celerra configured VTL to serve network backups (which I doubt a bit) then we should focus on what error do you get.
