VLAN and project
Greetings,
I could use help understanding how VLANs work on my PowerConnect switches.
I have a PowerConnect 2716 in my server room, and a 2708 connected to workstations on the office floor. A single CAT5 cable runs between the switches.
All of the servers (and the 2708 through the uplink) are connected to the 2716. This "internal-only" network does not go to the Internet. This is 192.168.0.x
My external network consists of a Linksys WAP54G connected to DSL modem with 4 LAN ports. This is 192.168.65.x
Now, for a marketing project, I must bring the external network to just one of the (formerly internal) workstations. Can this be done?
- I would think that (for example) I would connect the DSL modem to port 16 on the server switch, which would tag the external network into a VLAN.
- Then port 1 on the server switch would pass the external network and the internal network to port 1 on the user switch over the existing uplink cable.
- Then port 8 on the user switch would pass the external traffic to the workstation.
- All without affecting the internal traffic on ports 1-15 of the server switch and ports 1-7 of the user switch.
If this is how it's supposed to be done I haven't been able to figure it out. I am a networking novice after all.
Thank you so much if you can help me --
