I'm a long-time computer user but new to the world of high-speed cable internet--getting ready to take the plunge (and spend the bucks!). Is there any significant difference in brands of cable modems? What are some recommendations and what to look for? Same for routers--what should I be looking for?
As for cable modems, you need to make sure that the modem is compatible with your ISPs requirements. If you plan on using it with a router, just make sure that it can connect by ethernet. USB-only modems will not connect with the routers currently on the market.
As for routers, models from Linksys, Netgear, D-Link, and Belkin are quite good. Stay away from the Dell Truemobile line, as they seem to have more problems.
