Cannot connect to unsecured network router
At a local coffeeshop the other day I was unable to connect to their free wireless, though everybody else in the room was doing just fine. I could see the network under my "available networks", and even seemed to connect to it, but my browser and email could not connect to the internet.
Back home, I can connect directly through my 2Wire Home Portal (which uses a network key) but not to my netgear router which has no security turned on. My housemates are perfectly able to connect via cable to the router.
I used to be able to connet to either one, and switch back and forth easily.
I'm running Windows XP SP2 on an Inspiron 1000
Dell Wireless WLAN 1350 network card
my home router is a Netgear MR814
I don't know what kind was at the coffee shop
The DSL modem I can connect to is a 2Wire HomePortal 1000SW

Hello,
Is that WLAN card dual band or just B or G? If it is one or the other it is possible the router has been reconfigured to only allow 802.11b (11Mbps) or 802.11g (54Mbps) and it was previously allowing both B & G.
Also, make sure that the windows wireless settings know it is an unsecured network and hasn't ticked any boxes or anything. Windows can be over helpful sometimes!
